How Cross-Border Car Rental Works

Cross-border car rental lets you pick up a car in Montenegro, Croatia, Albania, Serbia or Bosnia and drive it across the border into any of the others, on into Kosovo, or through the EU and Switzerland. Everything that lets you cross, the Green Card, the insurance, and the paperwork, is arranged when you book, so there is nothing to buy or sign at the border. Here is how the whole thing works, start to finish.

Rent in any of the five pickup countries, pick your destination at the booking step, drive across, and return the car to the country you picked up from. The cover your route needs is added to the booking before you set off, never at the border.

1. Rent the car in your pickup country

You book a car from pickup points across Montenegro, Croatia, Albania, Serbia and Bosnia, from coastal towns and airports to Podgorica, Dubrovnik, Tirana, Belgrade and Sarajevo. The car comes back to the country you picked up from at the end of the rental, which is what keeps the whole trip simple. 2. Pick your destination at booking

When you book, you tell us where you are driving. That clears the specific car to leave the country for that route and pulls in the right cover. You can drive to Croatia, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, and Kosovo, or take the wider EU and Switzerland route. The cross-border destinations guide covers each crossing.

3. What is covered for your route

What you need depends on where you are going:

Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. No Green Card needed, and the widest choice of cars.
Albania and Kosovo. A Green Card is required and covered by the fee, on a smaller pool of cars.
A wider run into North Macedonia, the EU and Switzerland, with the Green Card covered by the fee. Fewest cars carry this authorisation, and it is not sold from every pickup country.

Where a route needs a cross-border add-on, it is shown and added at the booking step, with the exact amount in front of you before you pay. Where the destination needs a Green Card it is part of that fee, so there is nothing separate to arrange.

4. Drive across, and back

Carry your rental agreement, which names your destination as an approved country, along with your passport and driving licence. EU, EEA, and UK licences are accepted on their own; other licences should be paired with an International Driving Permit. How does cross-border car rental work?

You rent a car in your chosen pickup country, select your cross-border destination at booking, and the Green Card, insurance, and paperwork are added before you leave. At the border you show your rental agreement and drive through; there is nothing to buy or sign at the crossing.

Which countries can I drive to?

It depends where you pick up. From the five pickup countries you can reach neighbours like Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo and Croatia, and on the widest option onward through the EU and Switzerland. The full list of destinations depends on the country you pick up in.

Do I need a Green Card?

It depends on the destination. Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia do not need one. Albania, Kosovo and a wider run into the EU and Switzerland do, and the cross-border fee covers it.

Can I drop the car off in another country?

No. One-way cross-border drop-off is not available. The car must return to the country you picked up in. You can return it to a different city within that country.

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

EU, EEA, and UK licences are accepted across all neighbouring countries without an IDP. If your licence was issued elsewhere, or is not printed in the Latin alphabet, carry an International Driving Permit alongside the original.

How far are the neighbouring countries?

The nearest crossings are often only a couple of hours away, whichever country you pick up in. Albania and Kosovo are roughly 3 to 4 hours from Podgorica. Serbia is around 4 to 5 hours. The EU and Switzerland routes are full-day drives.
