A small but well-placed fleet
Sarajevo carries the large majority of the Bosnian fleet, with Banja Luka holding only a handful of cars. Book further ahead than you would for Montenegro or Albania, particularly in summer, because the pool is genuinely small.
What you need to rent
- Driving licence
- A full national licence with the details repeated in Latin script, valid through to the end of the rental. Photocopies and phone images are not accepted. If your licence is only valid in the country that issued it, carry an International Driving Permit alongside it.
- Age and experience
- The minimum age and years held vary car by car rather than by category, and the agent can decline if you do not meet the requirement for that specific vehicle. Filter on driver age when you search rather than assuming.
- A card in the main driver’s name
- Usually a physical embossed credit card belonging to the lead driver, for the deposit. Some cars accept a debit card, stated on the listing and your voucher, but it still has to be physical and personalised.
- Your cross-border choice
- Selected while you book, as a single fee rather than a choice of destinations. Confirm the countries you intend to enter with the rental agent and check they appear on your agreement.
Driving back
The car returns to Bosnia at the end of the rental. Cross-border one-way drop-off is not offered.

Which countries can I drive to from Bosnia?
Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia are the natural routes, and Bosnia borders all three. Add the cross-border fee when you book and name the countries you intend to cross so they are written into your rental agreement.
Is the cross-border fee one price, or does it vary by destination?

Where can I pick up in Bosnia?
Sarajevo and Banja Luka. Sarajevo holds most of the fleet and is the better choice for the coastal and Montenegrin routes; Banja Luka has only a small number of cars.
How far is the coast?
Dubrovnik is around 3h 30m from Sarajevo and Split about the same. Mostar makes an easy stop on the way south, roughly 2h from Sarajevo, and the road down the Neretva valley is the scenic way to do it. Note the Neum corridor: the coastal road to Dubrovnik briefly crosses Bosnian territory, so you pass two extra checkpoints even on a Croatia-only trip.
Is the fleet big enough to book late?
Not really. Bosnia has the smallest fleet of the five pickup countries on this site, so book well ahead in July and August rather than relying on late availability.
Can I leave the car in Croatia or Montenegro?
No. Cross-border one-way drop-off is not available, so the car must return to Bosnia at the end of the rental period.
